FILE TRANSFER CALCULATOR

File transfer time,
without the guesswork.

Big download? Large upload? Find out how long your file
could take, before you start the transfer.

THE INPUTS

Decimal unit · 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes

1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bits/second. Use your upload or download speed.

Account for shared bandwidth and overhead. Leave blank for 100%.

THEORETICAL

A little clarity is one click away.

Set your file size and speed,
then calculate your transfer time.

BEHIND THE ESTIMATE

The math behind the wait.

Read the quick-start guide
01

Bytes meet bits.

Files are measured in bytes; network speeds in bits per second. Multiply the file’s bytes by 8, then divide by the effective speed.

seconds = (bytes × 8) ÷ (bps × utilization / 100)
02

Mind your units.

Decimal units use powers of 1,000. Binary units use powers of 1,024. A 1 GB file takes 80 seconds at 100 Mbps; 1 GiB takes 85.89934592 seconds.

Leave a little headroom.

This is a theoretical estimate. Wi-Fi, network congestion, server limits, latency, and protocol overhead can all add time. Use lower utilization to model reduced bandwidth.

Use upload speed for uploads, download speed for downloads.
